General payment-provider comparisons tend to be vague. For SaaS subscription billing specifically, the differences are concrete and worth being direct about.
Stripe Billing supports proration, usage-based pricing, and complex plan changes natively. PayPal's subscription tooling is comparatively thin; Braintree sits in between but requires more custom logic for the same outcomes.
Stripe's API design and documentation quality remain a meaningful advantage for engineering velocity. This compounds over the life of a product, not just at initial integration.
None of this makes Stripe universally "better". PayPal still carries brand trust with certain consumer demographics. But for SaaS specifically, the gap is real.
